Jason Boland and Rich O'Toole played a 4+ hour set at the Dixie Chicken. I watched the whole thing. highlights:

epic-length jam sessions of
  • Purple Rain,
  • Seven Spanish Angels,
    and, in no particular order:
  • Boys From Oklahoma( which, holy shit, that was a long version ("i like to smoke, i didn't learn it from my daddy, my wife is skinny but i sure love the fatty" and others, inserted in the song)
  • Shot full of holes,
  • Mexico or Crazy
  • Tennessee Whiskey and Texas Weed
  • When I'm Stoned (some guys have weird ways to write love songs to their wives, see this link to the Ben Arthur concert for proof)
  • Copperhead Road (with the story of how JB met Steve Earle in a sushi restaurant)
  • Are you sure Hank done it this way
  • OD in Denver
  • Hank Williams
  • Devil's Right Hand
  • LA Freeway
  • The Road Goes on forever
  • Sangria Wine
  • Roadside Prayer
  • waylon cover
  • Bleu Edmondson cover
and there were many, many more. Very cool.

well... been a few days. Okay... ( i just typed "OJ," no kidding. woops. super-slasher vibes, bad)

I had an interview on Friday with Oceaneering and I think it went very well., the woman i interviewed with asked about, literally, every line on my resume. Lasted about 45 minutes, including the tour of the buliding. Haven't heard back yet; I'll be really very surprised it i don't get the job.

Saturday, I had the best steak I think i've ever had. Definitely in the top three. my dad and I went to Ruth's Chris Steakhouse, in Houston. Awesome steak, awesome service, and the two Glenfiddich scothes apiece didn't hurt either. I've never been to a restaurant where i felt more relaxed when i left than when i entered. I did there. very nice. Went to the Houston Gun Show before that on Saturday. Neat stuff. more relaxed than last year.

Moving back to Temple, soon. (the between time from the end of my time in CS to the time in Houston...) should be all right, if i could bring myself to finish packing all the College Station stuff I have remaining... it will be nice to have a few days at home.

Went to the Dixie Chicken the last couple days. played a lot of dominoes. good stuff. drank a lot of Shiner, and I think I'm going to try to go on the trip that a bunch of us are trying to go to Dublin, Ireland (there's one in Texas, not that one) for new year's. That would be about nine kinds of awesome.

Ok... not much else... but there's the last couple of days.

swear to god, the frat boy in the Dixie Chicken in the salmon-stripe buttondown with camouflage shorts on... didn't realize how much i wanted to beat his ass for that.

And i graduated Friday morning, too.

And i have a real interview in Clear Lake on Friday the 20th, for a job i think i have a damn good chance of getting, since this is like the third stage of interview-type-stuff. Which would rule. a lot.

i love college station at times

seeing and hearing an ambulance that is busting ass (lights, sirens, the works) honk out the "Hullabaloo caneck caneck" (da-da-da-da, da-da, da-da, say it out loud in that cadence, 4, short pause, 2, short pause, 2) on the horn is, for lack of a better word, insane. It's also why i like it here...

Hullabaloo Caneck Caneck (for those of you who aren't familiar, and there are many) comes from the Aggie War Hymn and is a short way to identify yourself as an Aggie.
in the war hymn, "Texas Universtiy" is the University of Texas, we just refer to them as "t.u.". Also, in the war hymn, "Varsity" is the proper name for Bevo, the University of Texas' mascot, a longhorn.

Yes, we have some wack-ass traditions...and i wouldn't take anything for them.

  • Telked to Whitney from home today. been trying to get hold of her all weekend...and now i'm not at home... back in CS, and now she calls back. Dammit. hmm, there's Easter, yet.
  • Talked to Alexis from home a good bit today; gonna try to get togethier wtih her later in the week. whoop.
  • went to the Dixie Chicken today. kevin and I may try the Chicken Challenge on Saturday. (two 12-oz beers an hour, every hour, from 8 am to 2 am, no leaving the premises, or sleeping) hmmm.... eh.

    okay... bedtime for me...

hmm. even now, the cycle of beer-beer-beer-beer, piss-in-the-yard-when-i-get-home-since-it's-quicker seems like maybe a bad idea.

    eh. maybe not.

    going to sleep....

Chris LeDoux passed away. I wasn't really a massive fan of his until last year, when i heard he'd be coming to the Texas Hall of Fame (it's a dancehall) in College Station. I found some of his music, and enjoyed(and still do) the tar out of it. The concert was great... see this entry from January 25th, 2004 for my thoughts on it back then.

"he's the last to quit, and the first to buy the beer..."

    lots of random stuff.

    lessee...

  • went to eat chinese with three of the geekiest (no seriously) people i know of. I seriously needed the Dixie Chicken afterwards...
  • watched Garden State. Natalie Portman is really good in that movie.
  • got prepared to go to Houston tomorrow later today. I need to go to bed.
  • talked to Adrienne for... nearly an hour last night. I haven't talked to her in a long time. I'll see her in a few hours tho.
  • Went for drinks with a buddy who's in from San Antonio. good stuff.
  • listening to Blue October.... good stuff too.
  • finally cleaned my work pants from bonfire. these really are comfortable. ('course, they've had three months in the weather to soften them up, too...)

All right. I concede defeat. I'm goign to sleep. busy day tomorrow. going to Houston... gonna see my buddy Daniel, and his girlfriend Keiko (who i haven't seen since Bonfire) and Ali and Adrienne... should be a fun day.

didn't do, well, anything productive yesterday. went to class... the sunflower seeds i ate while there were the high point.

went to Trevor and Val's for etouffee last night... cajun food is good stuff. pretty peppery, it was.

last night was, apparently, game night, all around. played some dominoes. Saw a drunk Okie piss into a trash can. (when there was a perfectly good not-being-used toilet not three feet from the trash can he pissed in) Gotta love the Dixie Chicken.

went to Kevin's, played some poker, played some more poker.

Talked to a pretty girl on the phone. Always good stuff, that.

I think i came out of the (5-dollar-buy-in but i went in twice) poker game up a couple dollars. not bad, either way, for several hours of poker. I now have a pretty decent handle on how to play, too.

I'm tired of working on this project. My group-mates haven't shown up for a single meeting, more than one of them at a time. We dont' ahve group meetings, we have "John showed up and, hey, look, you're here too. Cool." meetings.

Now, going to the Dixie Chicken 3 nights in a row, that's not helping. God, i felt like hammered dog shit this morning. Skipped a class and slept. I'm good now. We're going again tonight. Last night was "Cepheids come to the Chicken" night, basically. Geeks at a redneck bar. I LOVE IT. haha. Pat, Chicken, Randy, Kevin, me, Andy, Kelly, and Jamie. I think that's everyone that was there.

hahah. oh yeah, and i don't see how the hell I dunked my ring in Miller Lite. That shit is nasty. pat bought that pitcher, but, still... ouch.

Had some sangria, and a couple pitchers of Shiner, and one pitcher of Miller Lite between all of us. (well, all of us who drank, which left about half of the group out on that).

    blarg.

not many friends around in Temple... so bored. sleepy too tho, stayed up til 430am-ish on the phone. woops. gonna have to stop doing that.
    -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

sangria wine and 42 last night at the chicken was good.
have to get my Redneck Booster Shottm every so often.
(right, like i have to worry about becoming all new-york-city-ish all of a sudden. Hah.)
    -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

    hmm. boredboredbored. blarg.

going to go shooting tomorrow, cross your fingers that i can still shoot worth a damn. we'll see. As long as I don't have to shoot the friggin Enfield, it'll be ok. Stupid British rifles. It's more suited to hitting people over the head wtih than shooting 'em. I like me my American WWII rifles.
